The building of the Three Gorges Dam and the flooding the Yangzi River have meant that many areas along the Upper Yangzi River will be under water. Many sites along this part of the ricer have great historical significance and the Chinese government has endeavored to preserve as much of the country's history as possible by relocating or building dikes for protection.

In this final installment, Eric Danielson takes readers on a journey through these places along the Upper Yangzi. Some have already been submerged and this book probably contains the last descriptions, in the English language, of the sites as they were. In some cases, Danielson was also able to visit the new sites and offer a comparison. As he does in his previous two books, the author provides up-to-date practical information for exploring the Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi sites, complete with historical details which were previously only available in the Chinese language. This book also includes a list of places where travelers can stay and tips on hassle-free ways of getting around. Readers will come away with insight into the significance of the structures and places that can be found at the Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi River.
